On November 13, 2021, the Fifth Symposium on Local Government and Regional Governance, organized by the Zhou Enlai School of Government of Nankai University and the Joint Research Center for Chinese Government Development of Nankai University, hosted by the Department of Administrative Management of the Zhou Enlai School of Government of Nankai University and co-organized by the Center for Asian Studies of Nankai University, was successfully held in the mode of "offline + online".

More than 70 experts, scholars and journal editors from more than 30 institutions in 16 provinces , including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jilin University, Sichuan University, Central South University, South China University of Technology, Lanzhou University, China Agricultural University, Nankai University, etc., attended the conference. The highest number of online meeting rooms reached 430 participants.

Dr. Mi Pengju participated in the whole conference online and took part in the discussion of Sub-forum 3, giving a speech entitled "Urban Cluster Governance in China: State-Guided Scale Reconfiguration and Territorial Reorganization".

“The Symposium on Local Government and Regional Governance”was initiated by School of Politics and Public Affairs Management of Sun Yat-sen University and Guangzhou Xinhua College in 2014, has been successfully held five times in Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Xinhua College, South China Normal University, Central South University and Nankai University, which not only provides a platform for scholars in the field of local government and regional governance to communicate and dialogue, but also develops constructive academic views and theories on the modernization of national governance.It is reported that the 6th Symposium on Local Government and Regional Governance will be hosted by the School of Government of Peking University in 2023.
